Looking Ahead

I was making dinner last night when Kilian came up to me for a chat.

"So, I was talking to my teacher, and she said that if I want to be an engineer, then I need to have the BAC S (Science High School Diploma), which means a lot of math, science and I'll need to take English and German too."

I stopped. I turned. I stared.

The hell? Isn't my son.... like... 10 YEARS OLD?

Shouldn't he be dreaming about being a rock star or something?

Still a bit stunned, I slowly got the following out of my mouth... "O...K..., then. Well. Um. Since you start junior high next year, I guess you'll know how to start picking and choosing your options."

I almost felt like lying down then.

I'm raising Dilbert.

Hold me.

Engineers are paid handsomely. Look at it that way. At least he won't be living in the basement, sponging off Mom and Dad when he's 36.

I was born a Dilbert. Dilbert's are happy people who love to solve problems and ask questions even when the world around them is shit. Dilbert's might not be as lucky at love, but they are self-sufficient and capable. They have few wants and are often satisfied with the choices they have made.

Personally, my only regret in being a Dilbert is that I can not do art. I'm learning the flute, do a bit of blacksmithing but my hands and my mind's eye are always in two separate worlds.

Hey, there's a good living in the maths and science. Sounds like a sensible kid.

Said the scientist.
